My "new" bike.

Postby FRISCO67 on 10 Oct 2009, 00:21

Well I am going to have to thank my 1st ex-wife and my now common law wife to converting me to a Kawasaki rider. In May my ex wife from '87 called me up and asked if I could pick up her new bike for her a '09 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD. Well after teaching her to ride for a while we ended up re-connecting and rode on her bike together if I wasn't riding my neighbours 88'' Superglde for most of the summer and ....well I'll get to the point , I wanted a bike that was dependable enough for long trips and I started liking the idea of a getting another Kawasaki Vulcan to replace my Triumph as my daily rider, I found this one in our town on craigslist for $2500.. and ended up getting it for $2200 and a case of beer on Monday. On Tuesday I stripped the windshield, rear fender rack and crashbar, then on Wednesday took it out for an 80 mile test ride and ordered a Stage 1 Dyno Jet kit. Today (Friday)I found out that the bike already has after market pipes and a K&N air filter installed so I installed the D/J kit and took it out for a rip.... the bike runs way better now, I can't wait to get the other jets and "scooterize" it now! ... well here are the pics "Before and After"....now I just have to "Frisco" it as I am riding it.

Well I like the bike. But wait a moment here. You say your 1st ex-wife is now your current common law ? I like it. My first and only ex-wife was my lover for some time after she was with Mr. New. Great minds think alike. Way to go. About the bike I'm talking

Well I've started the transition to Frisco style, I changed the air cleaner over to an SU carb aftermarket filter and rejetted the carb to "Scooterized" specs, cut off the "mufflers " and replaced them with stainless steel tubing sections, Frisco mounted the King Sporty tank (stolen from my riumph)and removed the front fender and all the reflectors. Now all I have to do is lower it (maybe with a rigid strut), paint or replace the back fender, replace seat , re-hash the wiring to clean up the neck area and wait for my Khromewerks Drag bars with built in 8'' risers to show up. Here's da pics so far,

Well here is a small update...I rigged up a Velocity stack out of a stainless steel cup I got for a $1.25 (yeah!Yeah! I'm a cheap bastard) and am going to give it a test ride tomorrow and see if it is a waist of time or if it is OK and if I should get one machined up out of aluminum.

Well it's been a while since I posted anything on my VN800 , so here is where I am at. I didn't really want to cut and paste all the wiring if I didn't have to. So I removed all the wiring along the back bone up to the handlebar controls and also from under the seat from their mounts and laid it out and unraveled all the tape. I then started separating some of the wiring to reroute it. I figured out that I could relocate the Junction (fuse) box and flasher unit to the tool box compartment after cutting an opening in the tool box.I then ran the wires over the coil into the fuse box and now can reinstall all the original wiring back into the left side cover. I then ran the rest of the wiring over to the right side cover and installed the Igniter box in the right side cover and a small loop of wiring will sit under the new seat.
I have removed the rear fender and fender struts and have made a rigid bar to replace the shock which also lowers the ass end by 3.5'', I welded some sissy bar mounts on the rear of the swing arm and used this after market sissy bar I had laying around and mounted the fender I got for Christmas. I also cut down all the old fuse & igniter box tabs and removed the fender tab from the battery box + the seat support so that I could use either of my seats. One is a HD Badlander Softail seat I bought on Craigslist or my Mustang brand Universal Cobra seat for rigid frames that I ran on my Triumph.
My idea is that I can run the Badlander seat locally, change over to the Cobra in about 5 minutes when we go into the city 42 miles away with the kids or reinstall the stock rear fender / fender struts, shock, seat and gas tank in a bout 30-40 minutes for longer trips. Any ways here are some pics.
