rugburn's xs650 chop project pt. 1

Postby rugburn on 29 Nov 2009, 00:21

so winter is just about here and its time to build a new chop to
keep up with tikipunx and chen. yes the 360 is a fast little monkey
but it has to be balls out in sixth gear at 90 miles an hour to
roll with those two. so i wanted to do a well supported, anvil
tough, jap build. after some research the xs650 meets and
exceeds my requirements for this winters project.

so here it is.

i feel very lucky to have a frame builder about 20 mins.
from me south of boston. dave huntress, tanksbytigman.com
dave is letting me build the hard tail myself under his
watchful eye. i plain on doing all the fab work on this build.
lots of small well made cool parts. motor will get a freshen up,
and clean, light polish job. avons front and rear. disc break
upgrade in rear. this build will be typical rugburn city whip
style, short, low, fast and rude! mids with an aggressive body
position. many things still to be worked out but its a start.

Are you working with pre bent tubes , like in a T.C. Bros kit ? Looks like a good start.

nope bent the tubes up myself on a manual bender.
tigman has done a million of these frames so all i
had to do was pick my streach and he punched out
the measurements and let me at it after a quick
lesson on the bender. i have to say there is a bit
more to laying out a hard tail then i expected. i
learned a ton and can't wait to hit it again friday
morning.

Great start - looks like it was a healthy donor to begin with. I wish, I wish, I WISH I had started with a frame section from a reputable vendor like Dave.

Should be a nice winter project if it ever gets cold around here...

i know, weird. but i'm not complaining.
dave could whip up a frame from scratch
if you want him to, or build off what you
bring him. he has to be the fairest dude
out there.

started pricing upgrades for the motor last
night.

500 bucks for a sparx alt. unit
300 buck for the carbs
500 for a big bore kit.

thats 1300 bucks and i haven't lifted a finger lol.
will probably hold off on the big bore till i get the
motor tuned up and see what shape its in next
season. cant believe the price of the alt units though,
that shits outrageous.

I will be expecting a report on how to lay out and weld up a hard tail for the archives. Wish I had the skills to weld. Someday.....

I'm with gr8 on the hardtail building. Step by step in the tech section would be awsome!!

Here's a little food for thought..... I was at a car show this last summer and ran accross a Triumph that had the jugs turned around 180 deg. The carbs sat facing forward and the pipes dumped out the back. The guy said he had to time it 180 deg. from stock. It was BAD ASS! Is this possible with your XS? I'm not sure. But worth looking into if you get the jugs off.

P.S. If you do this and in works, I get the royalties. ;)
